The Institute of Agroindustry

The Agroindustrial Institute was created in 1990 to foster sustainable use of agricultural resources at a regional, state, and national level.

General Objective

The Agroindustrial Institute promotes the agrochemical, agricultural, and biotechnological industries at the regional, state and national levels. The following three dimensions support this mission:

  • Understanding the chemical and biological properties of flora and fauna that could be rendered fit for human consumption, or that permit the isolation of chemical compounds of biological interest.
  • Processing conventional and unconventional plants and animals to foster and conserve their textural, sensory, visual, and nutritional properties, thus adding value.
  • Developing transfer-technology projects to link various sectors of society related to the production and transformation of agricultural resources.

 

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of the Agroindustrial Institute include the following:

  • Determine the chemical properties of flora and fauna in the region.
  • Determine the biological properties of flora and fauna in the region.
  • Expand food conservation technologies and processes through less-aggressive research and technological development.
  • Study and evaluate microbiological security and food chemistry.
  • Determine the biological properties of the flora and fauna of the region.

 

Primary Activities

Technology

  • Development of new food products from raw materials available in the region.
  • Production of mushrooms with agroindustrial residues.
  • Training of rural community members in food management and preparation.
  • Designing and constructing waste-water treatment plants at the University.
  • Identifying active principles of regional flora.

Research

  • Isolation of colonies of microbes in natural sources.
  • Biotechnology for the removal of phelonic compounds .
  • Spectroscopic techniques to determine minerals, ascorbic acid and antioxidant activity.
  • Development of fiber-rich additives for bakery products.
  • Study of antioxidant activity for Heliocarpus terebinthinaceus extracts.
  • Synthetic chemistry of Heterocyclic compounds, 1,2,3,4-tetrahidroquinoxalin-2-onas.
  • Crystallization of protein of flora of the region.
  • Study of the effects that produce glass transition in foods.

Development

  • Training of foundation staff working in educational cooperatives.
  • Working in partnership with various communities on waste water treatment.
  • Providing courses to rural communities on food conservation and sanitation.

Teaching

  • The eleven professors and two laboratory technicians working with the Institute teach in the Food Engineering degree program and also support the Electronic Engineering and Industrial Engineering degree programs with general chemistry courses.

PHYSIOCHEMICAL OF THE FOODS

Description

This research cluster carries out investigation on biomolecule crystallization, food thermophysical properties and phase transitions.

These studies are based on the thermophysical properties of foods as well as to the role of water on the stability and preservation of biological structures, including the conditions for biomolecule crystallization.

 

Goal

Carry out advanced research in the physiochemical aspects of foods, such as the vitreous state and biomolecule crystallization.

 

Research goals

  • Study of the electrolyte solutions foods.
  • Application of physiochemical properties for the development of new foodstuff.
  • Measurement of thermophysical properties of non conventional foods.

CHEMICAL-BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Description

This research cluster studies the extraction, separation, characterization and production of bioactive compounds. The sources that are used are agroindustrial wastes, plants and microorganisms. New synthetic methods are also developed for obtaining types of compounds. The methods used for the separation of active compounds are liquid-liquid, solid-liquid, and solid phase extractions, synthetic membranes, and liquid chromatography. The structural characterization is carried out by means spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. The production of the compounds of interest is obtained by means of biotechnological methods or by organic synthesis. One of the main interests is the determination of functional properties in vitro (for example; antioxidant activity, antidiabetic, antimicrobial among others) of foods, plants or microorganisms extracts.

The cluster also works in the implementation of analytic methods for the identification and quantification of bioactive compound. Currently research is conducted to develop quick measuring methods (in real time) of physicochemical parameters for the characterization of chemical and biological processes. Additionally, the physicochemical changes of the bioactive components of foods are studied during thermal treatment processes. In addition microorganisms with beneficial properties for agriculture (biofertilizers) are characterized and produced at a pilot scale and their application in crop fields is assessed.

Additionally, work is been done on the design, construction and implementation of wasted water treatment plants from local governmental agencies and agroindustries using combined systems (biotic and abiotic) with the purpose to reduce the environmental damage.

 

Goals

  • To develop methods for bio-targeted synthesis of organic and inorganic compounds.
  • To develop and to implement methods for the characterization and evaluation of functional properties of bioactive compounds in foods, plants and microorganisms. As well as to study of the effects of thermal processes on these compounds.
  • To develop biotechnological processes for the production of high added value products, and the treatment of governmental agency and agroindustrial effluents by using sustainable technologies.

FOODS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Description

This cluster studies the physical, chemical and biological changes of foods during their prosecution. In particular, it seeks to harness the resources of region and agroindustrial waste.

By means of the disposition of the vegetable products of the region are obtained, are purified and are characterized enzymes to develop biotechnical processes that bear to the obtaining of new products like those related with the aromas.

On the other hand, we investigate the application of methods, conventional and unconventional, of food processing. Additionally can design and build equipment useful in the preparation of foodstuffs.

 

Goal

Develop investigation related with the physical, chemical and biological changes of foods during their prosecution.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Institute (ICSyH for its Spanish acronym) consists of full-time research professors who conduct scientific and technological research in the various social sciences. Their research seeks to offer solutions to regional, national, and international challenges. Because the ICSH seeks to share its findings with local communities, the Institute also focuses on development.

Business Research with Advanced Technology in the State

Research Areas

  • Business simulators in the learning process
  • Recursos naturales, necesidades sociales y estrategias de negocios.
  • Educational technology in strategic negotiations of human capital

 

Business Simulators in the Learning Process

This research area encourages creativity and business analysis through business simulators. Such simulators improve students’ management skills. Within thematic areas, students study the creation of a new generation of business models (virtual business) and value chains (markspace), analyzing their variables through educational exercises. The system variables and their interrelationships are accessible to professor-student teams. These variables allow for reflective analysis about the root causes, which allow for an improved decision-making process.

 

Objectives

  • To design, model, and implement simulated business environments.
  • To foster creativity and business analysis through business simulators to improve management abilities of students.
  • To become aware of new business models that operate in networks.
  • To introduce human capital competencies into virtual business, and to study the variables that integrate the value chain into internet marketing.

 

Educational Technology in Strategic Negotiations of Human Capital

The growth of education through Shared Virtual Educational Spaces (EVEC, for its Spanish acronym), with support in other information and communication technology, brings about formative action. This gives rise to an inter-cultural awareness that enriches learning about the actors in these processes. However, problematically, this may cause the integration of cultures in a training-oriented environment, which may not be suitable for everyone. Under this premise, this research area was created, to promote strategies of managing human capital with the application of educational technology. The following are principal objectives:

  • To understand the influence of educational technology on the economy and society.
  • To unlock opportunities for personal, professional, and organizational improvement through educational technology.
  • To create and support e-learning projects that align teaching strategies with business objectives.
  • Integral development of educational programs and virtual courses.
  • To implement social networks for informal learning (E-learning 2.0).

Organizational Strategy Generation and Management (CAGGESOR)

The Organizational Strategy Generation and Management Academic Group (CAGGESOR, for its Spanish acronym), through the generation and application of learning, researches business-opportunity development. This research fosters the creation, sustainability, and growth of new businesses in the market. Additionally, it contributes to self- and quality-employment opportunities, thus revitalizing the community and the region as a whole.

CAGGESOR attempts to contribute to organizational knowledge in the region by providing organizational theory and by supporting strategies of organizational development.

General Objective

To positively impact the economic development of communities in the region, identifying and developing tools that allow for the formation of active participants in business processes. Key factors include not only market and social diversity in the region, but also the need to analyze deficiencies in infrastructure, organizational processes, and financial capital.

Specific Objectives

  • To define strategies that permit the identification and development of business opportunities in the region.
  • To understand businesses in the Mixtec region and Oaxaca in general, allowing for improvements in practices that will increase competitiveness.
  • To diagnose businesses to detect potential problems and opportunities, and provide action plans to improve functioning and competitiveness.

    A través de esta línea, se pretende la investigación y el desarrollo de oportunidades de negocios, que permitan coadyuvar en la creación, permanencia y crecimiento en el mercado de nuevas empresas; contribuyendo al mismo tiempo a la generación de autoempleo y la creación de fuentes de empleo de calidad, revitalizando de esta forma la comunidad y el entorno regional. Identificando y desarrollando herramientas que permitan contribuir a formar participantes activos en procesos emprendedores de negocios, entendiendo y tomando en consideración no solo las diferencias en el mercado y en las estructuras sociales de la región, sino también en la necesidad de analizar las deficiencias en los elementos claves como infraestructura, habilidades y capacidad financiera

    En esta línea de investigación se pretende que a partir del amplio marco que brinda la Teoría de la Organización y con el apoyo de los planteamientos de Desarrollo Organizacional, se realice la investigación tanto teórica como empírica, para contribuir al conocimiento organizacional local. También se pretende trabajar en un ámbito estatal, nacional e internacional, a fin de poder conocer la forma como operan las organizaciones oaxaqueñas en general y aquellas que pertenecen a la región mixteca. The Design Institute was founded in 1991, one year after the founding of the Universidad Tecnológica de la Mixteca.

General Objective

To carry out scientific and technological study in diverse areas of design that contribute to regional development, and, in turn, state and national development.

 

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of the Institute are the following:

  • To foster development of Oaxacan communities via design projects that serve specific needs.
  • To train professionals to offer integral solutions to the problems of contemporary society through the development of objects and spaces that visually communicate the community´s needs and identity.

Development of Models and Prototypes

General Objective

Boost the impact of new technologies in the design industry, in human resources, and within organizations. These technologies improve the management of projects that enhance educational processes and personnel development.

This group is made of academics from diverse design disciplines, including graphic, industrial, and textile designers, along with architects. All share an interest in the promotion of regional and state design.

To drive the development of regional design through the application of technology.

The Electronic and Computer Engineering Institute (IEC, for its Spanish name) is the first and oldest institute at the Universidad Tecnológica de la Mixteca, dating back to the University’s founding on June 18, 1990.

The Electronic and Computer Engineering Institute’s facilities were inaugurated on August 15, 1997.

More than thirty-five full-time research professors, many of whom are leaders in their field, participate in research groups in electronic engineering and computer science. Research professors work in laboratories equipped to facilitate the search for solutions to promote regional development. The dedication, preparation, and efforts of these research professors make the Electronic and Computer Engineering Institute among the most recognized institutes of the University.

General Objective

The development and application of new technologies, derived through scientific research, to support the development of the Mixtec region. This is the mission of the Electronic and Computer Engineering Institute. It is dedicated to quality scientific research, to the development and application of new technologies, and to higher education.

Key Activities

The Institute’s activities can be grouped into two categories:

Basic and Applied Research:

  • The IEC’s research is strictly related to the application of new technologies, searching for solutions to regional, national, and international challenges. The Institute hosts full-time researchers in various branches of electronic and computer engineering.
  • Categorized in five research categories, the IEC researchers, in collaboration with students, carry out two kinds of laboratory projects: institutional projects, which apply methodologies and technologies to resolve common development problems, and basic research projects, which focus on academic promotion.

 

Development and Cultural Promotion:

  • The IEC also strives to promote societal development and cultural. Towards this end, the Institute pursues traditional methods such as dialogue and conferences for the community, along with the development of software for government agencies, repair and maintenance of computer equipment in public schools, and the creation of software for primary schools and special-needs students.

Networks and Distribution Systems

Objective

Our objectives focus on research projects, direction of theses, and the publication of results:

  • Formal methods for the specification, verification and implementation of communication protocols to provide security services, channel access methods, and concurrency control.
  • Development of architecture and collaborative applications for mobile devices.
  • Development of intelligent, concurrent systems of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp), supported by security mechanisms.

 

The group seeks to partner with other national and international research groups in pursuing common goals.

Specific Objectives

  • To propose protocols that meet the needs of network communication, such as improving existing networks, including protocols for distribution applications
  • To plan the structure and development of collaborative applications that can be executed in various mobile devices (palms, smart phones, laptop computers, etc) and environments
  • Analysis and development of intelligent systems of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp), such as security mechanisms necessary for their functioning

Ingeniería de Software

El Cuerpo Académico de Ingeniería de Software (CASI), es un grupo de investigación interdisciplinario en las diversas ramas de la Ingeniería de Software. Fundado en el año 2000, cuenta con distinguidos investigadores, laboratorios equipados y ha obtenido resultados prometedores dentro del área de investigación, así como en el desarrollo de software.

Objetivo

La investigación y desarrollo de las diversas disciplinas que conforman la Ingeniería del Software. La búsqueda en la realización de estos objetivos se hace a través de investigaciones realizadas en tres líneas de investigación.

Objetivos específicos

  • Investigar sobre la evolución, formalización y aplicación de procesos, notaciones y técnicas en el desarrollo de software.
  • Alentar el uso y desarrollo de software como una herramienta de soporte a la educación.

Reconocimiento de Patrones

El Reconocimiento de Patrones (RP) se interesa en el descubrimiento automático de regularidades en datos a través del uso de algoritmos computacionales. Estas regularidades son utilizadas para la toma de decisiones, tales como clasificar los datos en diferentes categorías.  El RP ha contribuido de manera crucial en la resolución de problemas reales en diversas áreas (biomedicina, bioinformática, minería de sitios web, entre otros); algunos ejemplos específicos serían: reconocimiento de voz, clasificación de tumores cerebrales humanos a partir de espectros de resonancia magnética nuclear, diagnóstico de cáncer de mama, recuperación de imágenes digitales por contenido, clasificación de páginas web, entre otros. La importancia del estudio del Reconocimiento de Patrones radica en el amplio potencial de aplicaciones que se pueden realizar en el estado de Oaxaca y del país. Algunos de los sectores en los que esta disciplina, debidamente enfocada, puede impactar son áreas del sector salud, financiero y medio ambiente.

Objetivo

El principal objetivo del CA es la investigación y desarrollo de aplicaciones para la resolución de problemas, del área de reconocimiento de patrones, en el estado de Oaxaca y el país.

Objetivos específicos

  • Realizar investigación básica para el desarrollo de nuevos algoritmos enmarcados en las áreas de aprendizaje supervisado, agrupamiento y reducción de la dimensionalidad.
  • Aplicar los algoritmos existentes de RP y desarrollados por el CA para resolver problemas reales en el estado de Oaxaca y el país
  • Formar recursos humanos (licenciatura y postgrado) de calidad en el área de Reconocimiento de Patrones.

Redes e Instrumentación

El cuerpo académico (CA) Redes de Instrumentación, con registro UTMIX-CA-5, fue fundado en el año 2001 por 7 profesores adscritos a la carrera de Ingeniería en Electrónica de la Universidad Tecnológica de la Mixteca (UTM). Actualmente está catalogado como Cuerpo Académico en Formación (CAEF), sin embargo nuestro objetivo es llegar a ser un cuerpo consolidado.

En el 2001, el cuerpo académico fue apoyado por parte el Programa Integral de Fortalecimiento Institucional (PIFI) con un proyecto para el equipamiento de un laboratorio de comunicaciones digitales (LabCD). Con estos recursos se consiguió la mayor parte de la infraestructura con que se cuenta actualmente.

En el 2003 el Programa de Mejoramiento del Profesorado de Educación Superior (PROMEP) apoyó al cuerpo académico con el proyecto PROMEP/103.5/02/1772 para el fortalecimiento del cuerpo académico. Con estos recursos se invitó a 2 profesores de la Universidad de Vigo (España), quienes impartieron seminarios a los miembros del cuerpo.

En el 2005 del PROMEP aprobó el proyecto PROMEP/103.5/04/2818, el cual sigue vigente. Con estos recursos se han asistido a congresos nacionales e internacionales, cursos de capacitación y actualización. También se ha empezado a trabajar en establecer convenios de colaboración con otros cuerpos académicos.

El objetivo del CA Redes de Instrumentación es desarrollar investigación y proyectos en el área de instrumentación electrónica y redes de comunicaciones de datos e industriales, con el fin de generar prototipos y formar recursos humanos. Está formado por 5 profesores en el área de electrónica, todos con maestría y 4 de ellos están realizando estudios de doctorado en varias instituciones del país y del extranjero. El 40% de sus integrantes cuenta con el perfil PROMEP, y se espera que en un futuro el 100% de ellos lo obtengan.

Desde el año 2000, la producción de tesis de licenciatura ha sido de 22 registradas y 17 concluidas satisfactoriamente, con lo cual se tiene una efectividad del 77%. En esta área se ha tenido un buen desempeño. Desde el año 1999 se han sido 42 artículos en congresos, memorias, memorias en extenso y artículos arbitrados.

Objetivo

Formar un grupo destacado de investigadores del área de control con la finalidad de repercutir tanto en el ámbito académico y regional del estado. En una primera etapa se realizarán publicaciones y dirección de tesistas. Posteriormente se establecerán proyectos regionales y estatales con la iniciativa privada.

Objetivo específicos

  • Desarrollar investigación en Redes de Comunicaciones Industriales e Instrumentación Electrónica Programable, que son las líneas de investigación que cultiva los integrantes del CA.
  • Integrarse en proyectos conjuntos para avanzar en el área de conocimiento que cultivan con el fin de mejorar la docencia frente a grupo e incrementar el grado de consolidación del CA.
  • Formar recursos humanos en estas áreas del conocimiento.

The Institute is also responsible for projects approved and financed by CONACYT, and this demonstrates the quantity and quality of research undertaken by the IPM. In addition, several research teachers are members of the National Research System. As pertains to Academic groups, the IPM has created three: two in Physics and one in Mathematics. A large number of the teachers working in the IPM have achieved recognition at the national level, which further demonstrates the quality of teaching in the Institute.

Ceramic Science and Engineering

This academic group works to consolidate the materials science component of engineering studies at the University, by way of preparation, synthesis and characterization of various ceramic materials. Characterization focuses principally on mechanical, electrical, optical and magnetic properties with a view to having greater control over their technological applications. The areas of investigation are: 1) Traditional Ceramics and 2) Advanced Ceramics. The research project currently under development is "The study of photo-refractive response of lithium niobate crystals considering their anisotropic effects at different levels and types of impurities."

Specific Objectives

  • Analyzing various ceramic materials, principally from Oaxaca.
  • Preparation and study of functional ceramic materials for possible technological applications.

Applied Mathematics

The academic group of applied mathematics is focused on research in optimization and approximation, probability and statistics, analysis and topology, logic and educational mathematics.

Specific Objectives

  • Research in semi-infinite lineal and convex programming, convex analysis, stability of problems of structural lineal programming, and the application of optimization to the approximation of functions.
  • Research in Bayesian statistics, classical statistics, industrial statistics, random variable processes and simulation.
  • Research in algebraic topology, diffuse topology, differential topology, and continuum topology. Research findings are applied to problems related to digital images. The h-cobordism theorem is studied as well as topological properties of continua.
  • Research in proof theory of non-classical logic, dealing with problems of axiomatization, demonstrability, and the relationship between various fields of logic: multi-value, intuitionist, paraconsistent, modal and temporal. There is also research in programming logic, computer science and artificial intelligence, and the study of representation of knowledge, needs, beliefs and goals.

The Institute of Hydrology

With the founding of the Universidad Tecnológica de la Mixteca (UTM) in 1990, several research and teaching institutes were established - among them the Institute of Hydrology. The objective of the Institute is to pursue scientific solutions to the problem of natural resource degradation (i.e. water, soil, vegetation, all of which form the basis of agricultural, urban and industrial development), with a view to increasing the quantity and quality of these resources and improving the standard of living of the Mixtec region, the state of Oaxaca and Mexico.

Objetivo

Buscar que la solución de los problemas y el desarrollo de la Hidrología se enfoque como una ciencia con visión integral, cuyo trabajo de investigación se base en un esquema multi e interdisciplinario, para dar soluciones completas e incluyentes, que abarquen los tres pilares del desarrollo sostenible: progreso social, crecimiento económico y protección ambiental

  • Application of research findings to promote sustainable development of communities in the State of Oaxaca.

  • Sustainability of hydrological basins: Research on topics related to the use, exploitation and conservation of water, soil and vegetation in hydrological basins.
  • Exploration and Evaluation of Surface Water and Groundwater: Applying direct and indirect research methods for evaluating rivers, dams, lakes, springs and aquifers to optimize their utilization and preservation.
  • Technological Innovation in Agriculture and Forestry: Using technology to develop forest trees, horticulture and ornamentals adapted to the Oaxaca region.

The Institute of Mining

Since its creation in 1992, the Institute of Mining has been working in compliance with the mission of the University: development, research, diffusion and teaching.

The foundation of the Institute is research with an orientation towards social development and attention to the mining needs of the Mixtec Region - establishing as the institutional framework the exploration and assessment of the mineral resources of Oaxaca and the Mixtec Region, with technological and economic proposals regarding the measurement and evaluation of existing mineral reserves.

Studies by various state and federal entities have served as bases on which the Institute of Mining is conducting research into the economic potential of deposits of gold, silver, titanium, rutile, ilmenite, antimony, silica sand, clay, mica, feldspar, gypsum, marble, cantera stones, stone aggregate, etc.

New entrepreneurial theories to promote the development of mineral potential guide the Institute in making technical recommendations which guarantee communities and indigenous peoples appropriate methods of developing necessary mechanisms to minimize the risks inherent in any mining operation.

The focus areas of the Institute are as follows:

  • Geology and Geohydrology.
  • Geophysics.
  • Mining.
  • Metallurgy.

 

Project follow-up is based on structured plans that permit a logical sequencing of the application of technical, administrative and economic expertise. Depending on the deposits in question, the process requires variations and adjustments in the evolution of each project. Specific areas of a project need to be strengthened in order for it to conform to a productive sequence of stages.   • To serve the mining sector of the state of Oaxaca in order to guarantee, from a technological perspective, its future development and competitiveness.
  • To undertake basic and applied research related to the comprehensive development of mining in the state of Oaxaca.
